Although we may not often hear of abortion cases, one major case took place last year that received national coverage. With this case came the biggest debate in the issue of the legality of abortion: when a child is considered human.
Determining the age of the start of life during pregnancy would permanently prohibit abortions after a certain age. Late-term abortions usually occur after the 20th week of gestation. At this point, almost all babies are viable, meaning they can survive outside of the womb.
Last year, Kermit Gosnell, an abortionist specializing in late-term abortions, was tried for five cases and convictedfor three cases of manslaughter. His practice was discovered to be extremely unsanitary and many procedures to be dangerous to the mother. In fact, one woman died due to an overdose of a drug that was meant to sedate her and induce labor. There were reports referring to his clinic as a “house of horrors,” with stored fetuses, jars of tiny feet, and bloodstained furniture. This is obviously not a professional or safe place for such dangerous operations.
However, the brutality of Gosnell’s case comes to a climax with the discovery of his late-term procedure. Gosnell would sedate the mother, induce labor, give birth to a living baby ranging from 20- to almost 30-weeks old, and then inserted scissors into the back of the living child’s neck, and snip his or her spine, murdering the baby.
This doesn’t sound like a service to me. To me, this sounds like the darkest, most sinister horror movie to hit theaters. It couldn’t possibly be something that women PAY for. If the child is already alive, why not give it a chance? Many men and women patiently wait and hope to adopt children. Why not just give the baby to parents who cannot have children? Why would you destroy a future? What if that tiny child would discover a planet with another life form, or find the cure for cancer?
If all of this is evil, gruesome, and totally depressing, then how can you justify abortion at all? How is a 3-week abortion any more civil than delivering a living child and snipping its neck? Abortion is never justifiable. Abortion kills a living child, no matter the age.
