I am about to share a not so shocking fact with you: the vast majority of today’s entertainment industry is pro-abortion.
You have your exceptions such as the Robertson clan, Jack Nicolson, Sara Evans etc., but for the most part the entertainment industry is not a conducive environment to come out as pro-life. Why are the majority of entertainers “pro-choice”, and how can we change that?
Around the time of the 1973 Roe decision, pro-abortion sentiment was high. This was large in part due to the momentum of the “feminist” movement along with a lack of conclusive, medical evidence on the pro-life side. As time has progressed, these trends have seen some change. The number of people who identify as “pro-choice” has fallen drastically according to a recent Gallup poll. In 1996, those identifying as “pro-choice” made up 56 percent of the country, whereas the pro-life label only got 33 percent of the populous. But in a recent 2009 Gallup poll, 51 percent of people labeled themselves pro-life. Only 42 percent stood on the pro-choice side of the line.
The point to all these statistics is that the majority of famous actors, actresses, singers, songwriters, among others today were raised in a culture where abortion was the acceptable and vastly popular. My generation is much more pro-life than the last. As culture changes, entertainment does as well.
Shaping public opinion in the streets works and is very effective. There is no question there. But how do we expect places like Hollywood to change without individuals with pro-life beliefs sharing those ideas? We have to become Hollywood.
A good example is the NFL. A few famous athletes that have used their platform well are Tim Tebow, Phillip Rivers, and recent Super Bowl winning quarterback, Russel Wilson. All three have expressed their conservative views in big ways. Millions of people have heard these men go contrary to the business as usual debauched ways of most NFL stars. This is an encouragement to other NFL stars and future players as well.
So ultimately, chase your dream. Become an actress or actor. Become an amazing performing artist. Be the one that helps change culture in the entertainment industry. Let your talent shine, and use your platform for good. Don't be afraid of doing all of this while standing up for what you believe in. The rest of us will be supporting and cheering you on when we get our tickets to your show.
