Part of being a voice for the unborn is to educate and defend prolife beliefs. Sometimes discussing these topics can be enjoyable, especially knowing that you are personally helping to educate society. However; more times than not, defending the prolife movement can be harsh and troublesome when faced with an uneducated or stubborn debate opponent. Here are a few common topics on things to mention during any debates one might encounter.
The most common defense against pro-lifers is that a fetus is not alive until birth. A great way to debunk this false accusation is pointing out the actual time when a baby’s heart begins to beat; 21 Days. Therefore due to a beating heart, the baby must be alive!
2) Forced Motherhood
Many people against making abortion illegal claim that forcing a mother to birth and raise a child conceived in rape will result in unneeded trauma on the mother. Though this theory can be tricky to discuss, one can point out that though the trauma of rape is terrible in itself, abortion will only intensify that trauma. It has been proven that women who abort children whether through rape or in general, suffer post abortion depression. Because of this, it can easily be acknowledged that aborting the child will only cause further psychological pain.
3) Unwanted Children in Society
Some people believe that abortion is a good tactic for “population control” and by aborting children conceived in poverty stricken regions it is actually ending any suffering that the potential child may have in life. The truth is; everyone is subjected to suffering in life however no person should be superior to another and dictate whether they live or die. No one has the ability to see the future and potential of another life therefore using this theory to support abortion is inaccurate.
4) Abortion is Safe
No matter how quirky this theory may sound, many people have attempted to use this as a defense for abortion. It is obviously easy to point out that abortion is the killing of a child therefore it is without a doubt unsafe. Abortions have also been scientifically proven to hurt the mother, both physically and psychologically. Surgical abortions in particular have been known to cause cervical damage, uterine tissue scarring, infections, and even death. Abortion is therefore an unsafe procedure to both mother and child.
The above tips can help aid in the most commonly known confrontations during a prolife debate. There are however many excuses and tactics that generally occur during such discussions.
The most important thing to remember is to keep a cool head during the entire discussion as well as stick to the facts. With these tactics one will surely be able to educate others about the demoralizing truth of abortion and defend the prolife beliefs and values.
