Modern day “progressives” like Elizabeth Warren love to tout their supposed political prowess over the backwards thinking pro-lifers like myself. In Warren’s own words, pro-lifers seem to be stuck in antiquated, less civilized times such as the 1800s. But how truly “progressive” are these modern day pro-choicers when it comes to abortion policy?
So to start, “progressives” have determined that all human life before this point of viability is worthless. The ideology which is supposed to be looking out for the weakest members of society has determined that a large group of persons should be stripped of their rights based on how helpless they are. In short, the more help a person needs, the less he/she deserves to live. That doesn’t sound too altruistic to me.
Furthermore, why should a person’s chance of survival affect its right to life? I highly doubt many progressives would argue that cancer patients have less of a right to life than a healthy person, just because the cancer patient has six months to live. In fact, I would bet that many progressives would argue to fund further medical research and better healthcare to keep the cancer patient alive and extend their life. Yet when it comes to abortion, the logic does not carry over. An unborn child is penalized for its inability to survive in certain environments, and is discriminated against and stripped of its legal protection.
What is most startling to me, however, is how progressives can support viability as the standard for legal protection while also supporting the advancement and protection of underprivileged persons such as African Americans, immigrants, and women, especially in third-world countries. According to UNICEF, male infants are less mature and have a higher chance of dying than female infants. Black infants have a greater chance of surviving than white infants. And infants in countries with better technology have a greater chance of survival than infants in developing countries.
Progressives have adopted a standard for determining legal personhood which is largely dependent upon a person’s helplessness, disability, sex, race, and country of origin. Last time I checked, these were all protected classes in some form or other. It is the progressives who are seeking to take this country back to antiquity, to a more brutish time where race and sex were the standard for legal discrimination, where science was more or less ignored in social policy, and where people who were different weren’t worthy of living a full and happy, independent life.
