To understand how such a horrific crime, abortion, seems so acceptable to the modern American, we must look to see where the devaluation of life began. I believe the collapse of the American family structure acted as the root for the degradation of life. In the 60's the free love and many civil rights movements shifted the cultural focus, in America, from the family to the individual.
The priorities became the individual's rights and feelings. Through bringing many necessary reformations, this shift has had many rippling ramifications. Divorce rates increased because marriage became based on each spouse's emotions for the other instead of the upbringing of children, premarital intercourse became more and more acceptable because it was their body and their choice, and single parents homes multiplied because of the empowered women movement and the aforementioned repercussions.
All of these effects have come together and destroyed the American view of the family. We now easily accept any situation, no matter what unseen traumas they may cause, that a family is in. No wonder that, especially with the modern separation between having children and having intercourse, that many believe women deserve the "choice" to do whatever they want to "their" bodies. Pro-choice Americans just want to give everyone the chance to achieve happiness in their "own" way.
The only chance we have to save many more infant lives is to make another cultural shift. We must revitalize the importance of the family and EVERY one of its members. We must prioritize the individual and the unit as a whole; otherwise, our country, which mirrors its families, will fall into farther disarray while we all focus further on ourselves instead of on everyone.
