In America today, it is a common perception that the majority of our fellow citizens are “pro-choice” when it comes to the issue of abortion. In a recent Gallup poll people were asked their impression of how most Americans stood on the issue. 51 percent believed their fellow citizens were “pro-choice”, while only 35 percent believed the majority stood on the pro-life side. Most people think the pro-life side is the minority, but they are, in fact, a growing majority.
When young people (ages 18-34) were asked their views, they assumed a pro-life view 57 percent of the time. Among this group, the idea that abortion should be illegal in all circumstances was more popular than in any other age group. One could guess the reason for my generation being more pro-life than the last is that science has greatly advanced since 1973. As education has gotten better, pro-life views have become increasingly popular. Also, the pro-life youth of today have become extremely active and dedicated to pro-life work.
I can not speak for all areas of our country, but I live in Idaho, so I’ll use my state as an example of the increased activity in youth-led pro-life activism. 3 years ago, there was a single pro-life student-led group in the state. As of today, there are 7 student groups and all are active in the pro-life community. That is a massive increase in activism in such a short time. As kids see that the pro-life view is becoming more popular, they have a desire to share their pro-life ideology more.
We have to realize that in today’s America, the pro-life side is the majority. Don’t feel like your view is the one without legitimacy. As education continues to grow, so will the pro-life views of our country, and especially our youth.
