Why is using graphic images of aborted babies such a controversy?
Yes, the pictures are not nice to look at, but the question is, do they have an impact on people?
Most everyone has seen the ads put out by the ASPCA. You know, the ones where “In the Arms of The Angels” is playing in the background, and poorly treated animals are shown to get an emotional response from you. This imagery makes you feel something, as it should. Everyone would agree that those animals need good homes and they should be treated well. No one in their right mind would think otherwise. So why do people get up in arms over pro-life imagery of abortions?
This last year in our schools pro-life group, we had two kids that were pro-choice before that day join our club. Imagery like this makes people stop and notice and think. The goal of these images is not to scare people, it’s not shock value, it is simple fact. This is what abortion does.
You will always have people get angry because they refuse to be open-minded, but they have their minds already made up.Many pro-lifers would also be opposed to the use of images such as these because they would rather not offend anyone.Don’t let this discourage you though! Even if people don’t like it, they still have to critically analyze what they have just seen.
What we must realize as a movement is that the only way abortion will be ended is through conflict. People’s views must be challenged and we have to educate as many people as possible through imagery like this. Realize that when images like this are used, it forces us as a culture and as a country to think critically about what abortion does. But more importantly, people see there is a victim in the act.
The ASPCA uses imagery to get its point across. The Red Cross uses imagery to get its point across. Any number of successful organizations with noble causes use imagery to help people understand what they are fighting against.
It is time that the pro-life movement embraced this imagery, and does the same.
