“All life is worth saving.” Hollywood masterfully portrays this pro-life concept in their newest blockbuster The Martian, starring Matt Damon as the film’s protagonist Mark Watney. Watney, a NASA astronaut inadvertently left for dead after a failed expedition to Mars, uses his ingenuity as a botanist in order to survive on the savage planet. Driven by an intense will to live, Watney endures two grueling years of hardship and loneliness on Mars and is finally rescued by a collaborative effort from NASA and his crew.
The Martian’s pro-life undertones, glossed over in favor of its fast-paced sci-fi plot, deserve acknowledgement. This film contains four pro-life truths that exhibit life’s intrinsic value.
2. Just because life isn't beneficial at the present time doesn't mean it's devoid of value. Even though Watney didn't benefit or contribute to mankind while stranded on Mars, his crew still returned in order to rescue him. Similarly, unborn babies do not benefit humankind in utero, but they are still valuable to humankind. The pro-choice community argues that unborn babies can be mercilessly killed in the womb just because they are seen as an unwanted burden to their mothers. However, if given the chance to live, the unborn can impact the world in a variety of ways, as sons, daughters, friends, leaders, innovators, and world-changers. Even while in utero, the unborn prove valuable by transforming women into mothers and continuing the human race on earth, which is deemed the highest calling of humankind. The unborn are intrinsically valuable because they enable mothers to be the very picture of unconditional love by caring for the most helpless beings on planet Earth without expecting any benefits in return.
4. The pro-life community is about unity, not isolation. NASA, CNSA (China National Space Administration), and scores of civilians bonded together to support Watney during his time of distress. Just as the world can unite in order to save one man, so we can also bond together to save the unborn generation. Pro-choice advocates disempower and isolate women, making them feel alone and helpless so as to manipulate them into choosing abortion during a crisis pregnancy. Unlike pro life pregnancy centers, communities that provide prenatal care to struggling women without taking lives, centers such
as Planned Parenthood limit life and cleave women from moral principles, creating an atmosphere of isolation. Pro life advocates choose to unify and support women by working together to save lives, not tearing them apart through abortion or euthanasia.
Even though he could have taken the “easy route”, Watney never took his life. Instead, he showed zeal for life by learning to persevere through hardship. Likewise, all those who are pro-life know that life is synonymously beautiful and hard. And that is what makes life so special.
