Abortion apologists often use the image of a wire coat hanger to celebrate the legalization of safe abortion.
That image would be far more effective if it were accurate, or if there were no more illegal abortions.
Dr. Samuel Lett, a physician in Selma, has been suspected and accused of performing abortions without a proper license according to LifeSiteNews. Dr. Lett's illegal activities have been reported to the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) and the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners; the state is yet to take action.
State law prohibits facilities without a state license to perform more than 9 abortions a month. Dr. Lett's clinic, unlicensed, had at least 10 scheduled abortions between July 1, 2014 and July 22, 2014.
This is the second illegal abortion facility that has been uncovered in Alabama in the past three years.
Abortion apologists claim they want safer conditions for women seeking an abortion, yet remain inactive when instances of legality and safety are brought into light. Why is it that abortion providers not held to the same safety standards as health care providers?
Rev. Terry Gensemer spoke on this subject, saying "Agencies like the ADPH are put in place to ensure the highest standard of safety for every patient. Months of inaction on a case like this imply targeted apathy towards the lives of Alabama women, while also bringing into question the intentions of the Department of Public Health."
This is far from the first time pro choice advocates have ignored or fought against laws that keep abortion as safe as possible for the woman (it is never safe for the child). Take Wendy Davis for example, her 11 hour filibuster in June 2013 prevented a Texas bill that would require abortion facilities to have admitting privileges at local hospitals, along with other mandates that would improve the safety of abortion for women.
By failing to uphold laws regarding abortion, failing to act when laws are broken, and failing to enact new laws that ensure the highest standard of safety, the pro choice community is proving that a woman's safety is not of priority.
Life advocates uphold the current laws that regard abortion and are attempting to take these laws a step further to encourage and ensure the absolute safest environment for a procedure that maims and kills thousands every day.
Shutting down illegal abortion facilities is an action that will ultimately help change the culture of death into a culture of life.
