Helpful Do's and Dont's to arguing online about abortion.
While this is all well and good, here are some dos and don’ts to arguing online.
DO: BE RESPECTFUL
Okay, I know this is really obvious because we should be respectful of differing opinions all of the time, but when you’re arguing about abortion, it is important to recognize that this is a very sensitive topic! In order to show individuals your point of view, it is important that they hear you. The second that they feel they aren’t being respected, they will shut you out. Any chance of conversion will be gone.
DON’T: USE JESUS AS THE ONLY PLATFORM ON WHICH YOU STAND
As a catholic, I totally understand how religion can be an important part of your faith formation and why you are pro-life. When you are discussing abortion with someone who is not pro-life, however, these people may not be religious, and will shut you out if the only argument you can give them is that abortion is wrong because the Ten Commandments say Thou Shalt Not Kill.
DO: GIVE THEM A CHANCE TO RECITE THEIR ARGUMENT
There is nothing that can turn people off faster than a one sided argument. Give your opponent a chance to speak up! You may not agree with them, but they’ll listen to you if you listen to them.
DON’T: RECITE THE SAME ARGUMENT OVER AND OVER AGAIN
I know that since I already said not to use religion as a base for your argument, things seem quite limited right now. At the same time though, we’ve all seen Juno. There’s no need to recite “They have fingernails” during every rebuttal you give. Investigate philosophical standpoints on abortion, as well as law and morality to give your argument a new life.
I know that this is a difficult task to undertake, but use these tips, and you can have a more meaningful and productive argument on abortion!
