From the beginning of the pro-life movement, there have been controversies over what kind of images are appropriate and/or effective. There has been far less discussion on the tone and attitude of the words we use. I have noticed several more aggravated memes and posts from various pro-life groups. One in particular, pictured below, seems to be discontent with minor victories. This has led me to seriously consider two things in the movement.
First of all, wars are often won through small skirmishes, not through headlong battles. You should NEVER be upset at people for celebrating the small victories. Even if these are as simple as keeping abortion clinics up to health standards or pushing back the allowable age to abort babies. Of course, there will always be more work to be done, but if it can save some lives, it is worth our time and effort to fight for.
Next, people need to realize ramblings don't win hearts; tender words do. We claim to be coming from the moral high ground so we must not stoop to their levels of hate. When debating, pro-lifers must stay calm and collected. If we start to yell or even speak angrily, we risk losing the respect of others. They will just dismiss us as misogynistic bigots. Conducting dialogue with love proves to our political adversaries our intents; they come from the brain not the heart. Through gentler speech, it is possible to change opinions. That must be our goal. We must maintain the moral high ground and avoid falling into the temptations of aggravated speech.
