As we all know, the state government officials were recently elected. Texas, my home state, has voted towards pro-life candidates for a long time so those who were pro-choice, like Wendy Davis, were rarely put into office. However, Ms. Davis has been in the Texas senate for 8 years representing District 10 and, in 2012, she tried to block Texas Senate Bill 5. This Bill would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, require abortion clinics to meet the same standards that hospital-style surgical centers do and mandate that a doctor who performs abortions must have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital. During the debate, Ms. Davis held the floor for eleven hours and almost succeeded in stopping the Bill. Fortunately, Rick Perry, Governor at the time, eventually managed to get the bill passed.
When Ms. Davis gave up her District 10 seat in the senate last month, Konni Burton took her place. Burton is a member of the Republican party and a pro-lifer. In response to Davis' previous actions, she went to her new job one day wearing the boots shown above (very top), mimicking and matching Davis in the Senate. Ms. Burton made a powerful statement and hopefully other government officials can do the same. Ms. Burton is a role model for the pro-life youth everywhere.
