Merriam Webster defines loophole as, “an error in the way a law, rule, or contract is written that makes it possible for some people to legally avoid obeying it.” You may associate the term with unctuous politicians attempting to evade the law by pinpointing its legal loopholes. People who search for loopholes are usually people who exploit the laws of the land for their own unscrupulous gain.
Many people treat abortion as they would a legal loophole. They denounce abortion unless it poses a threat to women’s autonomy. They wage war against the Grim Reaper of Planned Parenthood unless it poses a threat to their lifestyles. They denounce Cecile Richards unless the life of the unborn child is seen as a hindrance to social progress. Their ideology is riddled with so-called “exceptions” to the pro-life worldview. This argument is punctuated with every “unless” and “except” in the English language, so much so that it is fraying at the seams. Their worldview is coming undone, right before our very eyes.
Abortion is unjustifiable, period. No exceptions allowed. No “ifs, ands, or buts” included. You cannot add an amending clause to your pro-life worldview in order to justify abortion in special cases such as rape. To do so would violate the intrinsic sanctity of life, as well as exempt you from all forms of moral responsibility. Yes, we are all morally responsible to heed the laws of science and uphold basic human decency, both of which pertain to the pro-life worldview.
Don't shirk your moral responsibilities. Don't attempt to evade the all-encompassing pro life worldview with so-called “exceptions.” Abortion is not an asterisk that you can place at the end of your worldview in order to revise or amend your previously-held convictions. Abortion is not a safety net, nor is it a “catch-all” for rape, failed birth control, or family planning. Instead, abortion is a hangman's noose that is responsible for the deaths of thousands of babies each year.
Let us strive to close the moral loophole of abortion with rational and reasonable rhetoric. Let us even go above and beyond by seeking to deem abortion illegal by overturning Roe v. Wade. Moreover, abortion is more than just a loophole. It is a gaping tear in the moral fabric of our society. Mending it requires all of our intellectual and persuasive efforts. Only after the phrase “pro-life with exceptions” is discarded can the pro life movement gain traction.
