For centuries, women have been striving to break free of gender oppression stimulated through the force of male domination. Due to the sensitivity of this subject, there has been strong confusion regarding woman’s rights and abortion legalization.
· Radical-Libertarian Feminism
Radical-Libertarian feminists believe that femininity and reproduction limit women's capacity to contribute to society. Women should therefore be viewed as androgynous (to appear neither male nor female in appearance but having both conventional masculinity and feminine traits). Radical-Libertarian feminists are strong promoters of abortion, contraceptives and other forms of birth control, viewing child birth and rearing as a form of hindering woman’s rights.
· Pro-Life Feminism
Pro-Life Feminism believe that part of their responsibility as women includes opposing abortion which they view as a negative effect upon woman’s rights effort in moving forward. Having been created in the early to mid-1970s, Pro-Life Feminists consider the actions of abortions to serve as an evil that is forced upon women by men, in an effort to further impede attempts for women to move forward in society.
While both views on feminism serve as a tool in helping women to strengthen their position in modern day society, Radical-Libertarian Feminism begins to set the progress of woman’s right back by insisting anti-abortion laws to be a form of hindering woman’s right. As the beliefs of Pro-Life Feminism points out, being against abortion serves as progress in the effort to maintain a woman’s position of respect. By allowing abortion to become a form of legality, this is doing nothing more than hindering the rights of both mother and child, specifically by insisting the child is meaningless if the mother denies its life.
While women deserve the same respect and dignity that males have succeeded in obtaining by default, women are also called to a higher calling of affection and motherhood. By being placed with the task of raising children may be viewed as a position of inferiority by certain feminist beliefs, women who are positioned with roles of motherhood, in fact, hold a much more superior role then they may be aware of. Motherhood should not be seen as a subordinate position but rather an honorary role. Without women, the human race would not exist because women have been graced with the task bringing life into this world and will continue to sustain human life for generations to come.
